An anal fistula is a connecting tract between the lining of the internal anal/rectal area and the skin surface. This is due to different factors including inflammation, infection, after anorectal surgery or after trauma. It could also occur from some diseases like Crohn’s disease, cancer or prolonged diarrhea. Patients may complain of swelling, pain and discharge. There could also be a leakage of feces through this abnormal passage. It tends to be painful when associated with an abscess. Depending on the extent of the fistula and the patient’s wishes, there are a handful of procedures that Dr. Ambe can perform to help relieve the patient’s symptoms, heal the fistula and afford low recurrence. The main idea is to repair the fistula, but still allow the patient to be able to maintain control of their bowels.
