Ostomies are created when a portion of bowel is brought out, opened and sutured on the abdominal wall. A bag-like device (ostomy appliance) is placed over this site to facilitate collection of the fecal material. Intensive preoperative preparation and patient education are important to ensure better outcomes with the ostomy. Occasionally some complications such as hernias, prolapse bleeding, skin irritation, ostomy narrowing could occur and can limit one’s quality of life.
