Abdominal hernias occur when internal abdominal structures protrude through a weakness in their encasing structure; be it the diaphragm, abdominal wall, back muscles or the pelvic floor. Abdominal wall hernias occur with the highest frequency compared to the other locations. These include umbilical, ventral, inguinal, and femoral hernias. Weaknesses in the abdominal wall could result (amongst other things) from birth or acquired from a poorly healed surgical incision. Durable hernia repairs have been enhanced by recent advances in mesh technology. Dr. Ambe will perform an individualized assessment of each hernia and offer repair options including the use of a mesh and laparoscopy where indicated.
